About Dr. Shere Byrd

Shere Byrd is a professor in the Department of Biology at Fort Lewis College. She joined the college in 1992. Dr. Byrd is a cell physiologist who researches effects of alternative or dual-treatment regimens on different types of cancer. In Dr. Byrd’s lab students participate in research investigating internal cellular responses to different treatment regimens and utilize current techniques in cell and molecular biology. Dr. Byrd is the faculty advisor for pre-health professions students as well as for the Pre-Health Professions Club. She is involved with Village Aid Project at Fort Lewis, travelling with students to developing countries to help design water and sanitation systems. Dr. Byrd has secured numerous grants for Fort Lewis from organizations such as the Department of Education and the National Institutes of Health to fund scientific research among students and support the education of Native American students.

Dr. Byrd has received several awards including: the Roger Peters Distinguished Professor (2011), the Fort Lewis College Achievement Award (2012), and the Alice Admire Excellence in Teaching Award (2007) and has been a nominee for the Carnegie US Professor of the Year. She is a national councilor, biology division, for the Council for Undergraduate Research, a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, a member of the San Juan Basin Board of Health, a member of the Durango 9R school board, and a grants reviewer for the National Science Foundation.
