A community of care begins with education

Health Promotion and Education empowers students to make informed decisions through wellness education, harm reduction initiatives, and skill-building programs. We offer workshops, trainings, and outreach for students, faculty, and staff.

Mental health awareness and suicide prevention

Suicide and mental health challenges like depression and anxiety are major public health issues, both nationally and within our community. At Fort Lewis College, we address these concerns openly, inclusively, and proactively. Recognizing the interconnectedness of mental health struggles, we foster awareness and support to prevent tragedies.

We offer comprehensive mental health and suicide prevention programs, empowering every community member to play a role in supporting those in need. By building a culture of care and empathy, we encourage people to reach out when signs of struggle appear.

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is an evidence-based suicide prevention training, similar to CPR, that equips everyday people with the skills to respond to someone in crisis. In just 60 minutes, participants learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, engage in a supportive conversation with someone who may be at risk, and connect them with appropriate resources. Certified QPR instructors provide training on campus and throughout the community.

You Can Help a Student Training is CANCELED for the Fall 2026 semester.

You Can Help a Student trainings help faculty and staff recognize signs of mental health struggles, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Participants learn how to start conversations, offer support, and connect students with resources to create a safer, more supportive campus.

We also offer a student-led You Can Help a Friend program through WellPAC and host open group discussions for navigating difficult situations. As part of our JED Campus initiative, these efforts empower our community to take action in supporting mental health and well-being.
