Have you ever wondered how pop stars and rock stars make it to the spotlight? The answer is somewhere backstage, in the behind-the- scenes business of marketing, selling, protecting, and managing the music. FLC’s Music Business major explores how music is published, licensed, legally protected, and consumed. You’ll graduate ready to launch the next generation of musical talent.

Admission Requirements

Admission to FLC and the Performing Arts Department Music program is a dual admission process. Application to be a student at the College is through the Admission Office.

Admission to our music programs is through an audition admission process. You can audition prior to acceptance by the Admission Office. Acceptance to the Music Department does not guarantee admission to FLC.

What it's like to study music at FLC

Hallie Denman, Music Business, ‘19

"The FLC Music Department gave me countless opportunities to grow, lead, and share the gift of music. The small classes inspired and prepared me to continue a career in arts administration–and to always keep singing."

A community of opportunity

Between chances to perform on campus and in Durango, and the opportunity to learn from professional musicians serving as guest artists, you’ll have an abundance of musical experience under belt before you graduate.

Performance

You will have the opportunity to perform in the symphonic band, chamber orchestra, percussion ensemble, jazz ensemble, concert choir, men’s choir, chamber choir, and other instrumental and vocal chamber ensembles.

San Juan Symphony Orchestra

Upper-division string students are able to audition for the San Juan Symphony Orchestra. The SJSO is a semi-professional orchestra whose members come from Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado.

Artist in Residence Program

The program presents a variety of concerts and master classes by guest artists to enhance your musical education. An endowment has been established to support the program and has grown to well over $100,000.

What can you do with a Music Business degree?

With your passion for music and the skills to produce and publish it, you'll bring melodies to the masses. In what ways you do that, it's up to you.
