The Colorado Sun highlights Team USA Olympic mountain biker Savilia Blunk (ATT '18-21) among the Durango-trained cyclists who are competing in the Olympics in France this year. Blunk said that riding for the FLC Cycling Team and training in Durango fired her passion for the bike, improved her riding skills, and shaped her career trajectory.

Students in Rachael Nez's Navajo class developed educational videos for children ages 4-7, hoping to inspire curiosity and pride in their Diné language. During a brainstorming session, they developed the themes and words that would later be included in the videos.

McBrayer said the award will allow him to continue exploring the issue of misinformation and fake news. Specifically, he will explore a range of steps liberal societies may justifiably take to limit the production and spread of fake news, encourage the production and spread of genuine news, and insulate political and social life from the harms of fake news that cannot be suppressed.

Weighing in on a feature story for The Colorado Sun, Jason Pettit (Psychology, '23) discussed his experience with homelessness and FLC's rapid re-housing program. The program helped 108 students in its inaugural year with emergency hotel stays, financial assistance for move-in-related costs, and support with rent and utilities.

After over two years of construction, FLC's Schlessman Family Hall opened on April 28. Named after FLC alumnus Gary Schlessman (Business Administration, ’79), whose foundation donated $2 million to the project, the complex houses classrooms for FLC’s Public Health and Health & Human Performance departments.

Snowpack is estimated to be 190% of the average in the Dolores River Basin, leading to a 30-to-60-day recreational water release from McPhee Dam into the Lower Dolores River. After leading the Skyhawks through a historic campaign on the court, head men’s basketball coach Bob Pietrack was named the South-Central Region Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Akuel Kot, a senior studying Sports Administration, was also praised with First Team All-Region honors.

William Nollet receives $150,000 from US Department of Energy

William Nollet, associate professor of Physics & Engineering, received $150,000 from the US Department of Energy through the University of Michigan for “Advancing Diffusion Bonding for Compact Heat Exchangers: Development of enabling Fabrication Technology for Compact Heat Exchangers for Advanced Reactors.”

Don May receives $120,000 from the National Science Foundation

Don May, professor of Physics & Engineering, received $120,000 from the National Science Foundation through Colorado State University for the Louis Stoke New STEM Pathways and Research Alliance: Rocky Mountain Alliance for Minority Participation (RM-LSAMP).

Members of FLC’s Strategies for Ecological Education, Diversity & Sustainability Club, or SEEDS, spent January 8-12, 2023, exploring Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. The student-led study abroad experience shed light on the ecological diversity of a destination known for its pineapple drinks and banana boats.

The FLC men's basketball team climbed the Division II rankings to claim a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season title and capture the RMAC Tournament championship. The team received the No. 2 seed for the South-Central Regional Tournament at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.

Misty Sandoval, a senior studying Public Health, is making an impact at FLC. She is the youngest member of the Native LGBTQ+/Two-Spirit Advisory Council for the Southwest Indigenous Women's Coalition. She decided to go to FLC because of the Public Health program's strong reputation.

Manna Soup Kitchen has been providing soup to the Grub Hub Food Pantry since March 2022. The delicious partnership was forged by Manna's Chef Seanan Culloty and FLC Basic Needs Coordinator Stella Zhu.

The Center of Southwest Studies hosted an event with Alexandera Houchin, a nationally renowned ultra-endurance racer. Dubbed "A Conversation with Alexandera Houchin," Houchin discussed her career as a cyclist. Houchin is the current women's overall record holder for The Colorado Trail Race.

FLC’s Black Student Union held a series of events for Black History Month to educate students about available resources and engage with the FLC community. BSU hosted events such as trivia, open houses, and seminars featuring FLC's Native American Center and guest speakers.

Dyllon Mills (Public Health, '22) was appointed vice-chair of the Kwiyagat Community Academy school board. The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe opened KCA in September 2021, and it is Colorado's first charter school located on an Indian reservation.

Charles Hakes, a senior lecturer of Physics & Engineering, shares his stargazing knowledge of the most recognizable constellation in the night sky: Orion's Belt. The triad constellation was named after Western mythology's great hunter, who battled a scorpion sent by the gods.

FLC historian synthesizes 11,000 years of Bears Ears history

Bears Ears National Monument is a fascinating, mysterious natural wonder in San Juan County, Utah. The monument has many geological formations, including towering cliffs, deep canyons, and sprawling mesas. The area is dotted with cultural sites, petroglyphs, and other historical pieces, evidence of the Indigenous nations inhabiting the region for thousands of years.

FLC committed to the housing security of its faculty and staff by launching the Employee Mortgage Assistance Program, or EMAP. In partnership with the HomesFund, a certified Community Development Financial Institute and HUD-approved housing counseling agency, FLC will finance below-market loans for qualifying staff and faculty.

In a column for The Durango Herald, Ben Waddell, associate professor of Sociology, advocates for due process for immigrants. If the United States allows millions of people to be processed outside the Constitution, it places everyone's rights at risk, Waddell said. 

Gilda Yazzie

Gilda Yazzie (Business Administration, '97), a long-time advocate for affordable housing in La Plata County, joined four other candidates vying for open Durango City Council seats. Yazzie, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, said she would like to see the city provide more educational opportunities for children of all ages.
